Onyx: A Masterpiece of Modern Luxury in Crown Canyon
Onyx stands as the inaugural jewel in Crown Canyon, an ultra-luxury mountainside community in Paradise Valley, Arizona. This private enclave is nestled within a canyon, offering both seclusion and breathtaking views, making it the epitome of modern desert living. Designed by BedBrock Developers and CP Drewett, with interiors by Mara Green and furnishings by Kaitlyn Wolfe, Onyx exemplifies a harmonious blend of luxury, innovation, and connection to nature.
The design of Onyx is a tribute to Ralph Haver, the iconic Arizona architect. Like Haver’s work, Onyx integrates seamlessly into its natural surroundings, combining modern sophistication with rustic elements. Inspired by the client’s desire for a home that balances luxury, practicality, and nature, the residence is carved into the hillside, allowing it to merge effortlessly with the rugged terrain. Floor-to-ceiling raked windows follow the slope of the rooftop, while motorized glass doors create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living spaces, offering unobstructed, panoramic views of the surrounding canyon.
Key architectural elements include rustic walnut tongue-and-groove ceilings, exposed steel I-beams, black basalt tile accents, and 8-inch-thick white concrete floors. These materials contribute to Onyx’s organic aesthetic, making the home feel as though it was born from the mountain itself. The residence spans 7,000 livable square feet and a total of 15,000 square feet under roof, offering ample space for luxury living. It features four bedrooms, a detached casita with a music room, and a 4-car garage.
One of the standout features of Onyx is its private zero-edge pool with a swim-up bar. Designed to blend relaxation and entertainment, the pool area is a perfect retreat, offering stunning views while providing a luxurious space for leisure.
The project, however, came with several challenges. The steep hillside location required precise excavation to carve the home into the terrain without sacrificing safety or the panoramic views. The city's requirement to preserve a monumental rock in its original position also posed a design obstacle. The team embraced these challenges by adopting innovative solutions, such as utilizing rock excavated from the site as veneer and accent materials for both the interior and exterior, creating a natural connection between the home and its surroundings. This approach, combined with the award-winning fluted masonry work by BedBrock's in-house team, earned the project a gold award from the Arizona Masonry Council.
The home’s structure is built with steel, ensuring both strength and aesthetic appeal, while floor-to-ceiling glass windows capture the stunning canyon views from every room. Inside, the millwork features an entire walnut tree, with its grain and tree rings carefully matched to create a cohesive, organic flow throughout the space. Polished steel countertops in the kitchen further showcase the commitment to using unique, high-quality materials.
Onyx is not only a work of architectural beauty but also a technological marvel. Serving as a demonstration home for Crestron Home automation, the residence is 100% automated, with all systems controllable both onsite and remotely. From lighting to climate control, this home integrates cutting-edge technology into everyday living.
Crowning its luxury is a 104-foot-long covered patio, perfect for outdoor gatherings, and 16-foot ceilings at its highest point. With motorized glass pocket doors that span 23 feet, Onyx creates an unrivaled experience of blending indoor and outdoor spaces.
